River of Fire

What is this joy?
This joy that floods me:
a rushing river
clean and pure, from the mountains.

Why am I so glad,
so purely, cleanly glad,
at God and sinners
reconciled?

I fall and cry out.
And Father, your loving arms
lift me up once again,
never tiring of your tottering child.

Why?
Is this what love is?
Is this who Love is?
Justice and mercy kiss.

A calm and gentle repose
settles over my soul.
A sense of wholesome contentment;
of peaceful joy, brightly burning.
